BT has me flummoxed

If, like me, you’re a BT broadband customer, you may be slightly puzzled by what turned up in the post this morning.

The letter I received actually appears to be offering something for nothing – in fact, less than nothing.

It says I can pay £2 less a month and make internet and phone call savings plus have a free “hub phone” and “home hub”, whatever they are. (Yes, I know I should have been paying attention to the adverts with that nice bloke from Love Actually).

I’ve read the letter twice and still haven’t spotted the catch.

Can it be that BT is cutting prices in a bid to retain customers? Or is something more sinister going on?

If anyone has any thoughts, please let me know.

I got this mailing too. It’s a very clever ploy by BT - make people think you’re being really generous by cutting rates, but instead of just doing it, so everyone benefits, you make them fill in a slip and send it back if they want to benefit. Tons of people won’t bother, so BT can go on charging them the old rate. Cunning, eh?

I had a call from BT yesterday about this. I reckon all those combined offers from the likes of Virgin have got them well rattled and they’re tyring anything they can think of to hang onto customers. The guy said if I accepted I’d be tied to BT for another 12 months, 18 months if I took the free phone and stuff - so maybe that explains it. i said yes because i wasn’t planning to move anyway, but anyone else accepting this deal should think about whether they really want to be stuck with BT for that long.

I sgned up for this BT £2 off offer too. Got the confirmation email this morning and was horrified - it said I’d be paying £24.99 a month. That’s 2 quid MORE than I’m paying now. So I got on the phone to BT. The call took 38 minutes - most of it hanging on in a queue to be answered. All to find out that the £24.99 includes VAT and the lower price on my last bill didn’t, so yes, I will be saving £2. I felt like a complete idiot. Think you said something on another post about learning to read the small print before you rush in. Yes, well…

Well, my free phone has finally arrived, but there’s no sign of the free homehub, and without that it’s useless. I’m not holiding my breath!
